Wackiest Vacation Contest

What started out as an ordinary family outing to the drive-through safari at Cedar Point Amusement Park, in Sandusky, Ohio, turned into an adventure that can only be described as hog wild,” explains Dawn May Johnson, a stay-at-home mom of four, from Piqua, Ohio. “We were given a big bucket of food at the entrance, along with the rules for the drive. One of the rules was that if you decided to drive with your windows down, you had to leave them down the entire time so that animals wouldn’t get trapped in your car.”

Wanting to get the most out of the experience, Dawn decided to leave the window down — against the wishes of her husband, Ernest. At first, everything went great: She tossed food to the animals, who peacefully ate it. “But suddenly, a huge warthog stuck its head in through the window,” she says. “It knocked the bucket of food out of my hand, causing it to fall between my legs onto the floor. The warthog was drooling all over me, going between my legs to get the food while my family cracked up,” Dawn recalls.

“Meanwhile, I was screaming at Ernest to drive away. Unfortunately, our van was surrounded by animals and he couldn’t move.” Finally, a safari employee on a golf cart came to Dawn’s rescue, scaring the animals away.

“Afterward, I smelled -horrible, and the rental van was filthy,” says Dawn. “We tried our best to clean it, but I’m sure whoever rented it next noticed a slight odor of warthog!”
